Visa®, MasterCard® and other payment brands each have their own data security programs that require merchants to safeguard credit card processing data. However, these companies have also adopted common industry security requirements referred to as the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards (PCI-DSS) so all merchants can follow a single requirement for safeguarding sensitive data.

Merchant who run transactions through the internet are required to have an ASV run tests on their networks.  Approved Scanning Vendors (ASVs) are organizations that validate adherence to certain DSS requirements by performing vulnerability scans of Internet facing environments of merchants and service providers.
